Marrying my Cousin – Part 5

I have previous documented many instances where individuals in my immediate family have married distant cousins (unbeknownst to them at the time). There have included:

·       My wife and I were 10th cousins (*1).
·       My parents were 9th cousins (*2).
·       My mother’s parents were 7th cousins (*3).
·       My father’s mother and step-father were 8th cousins, once removed (*4).
·       My wife’s parents were 10th cousins, once removed (*5).

Now I have one more such connection – my son and daughter-in-law are 8th cousins, twice removed. Here are their lineages back to a common ancestor.

Pamela [Coulter] Russell
Marva [Walton] Coulter
Kenneth Walton (1910-1998) to Indiana
Harriet [Benton] Walton (1882-1976)
Frances [Merrill] Benton (1840-1898) to Kansas
Lloyd Merrill (1804-1854) to Ohio
Theodore Merrill (1761-1832)
Elijah Merrill (1720-)
Abel Merrill (1680-1759) to West Hartford, CT
John Merrill (1636-1712) to Hartford, CT

Christopher Russell
Alan Russell
Sylvia [Pierpont] Russell (1924-2012)
Harold Pierpont (1898-1969)
Annie [Merrill] Pierpont (1858-1898) died in childbirth
Nathan Merrill (1823-1909)
Elijah Merrill (1788-1852)
Ichabod Merrill (1754-1829)
Caleb Merrill (1735-1812)
Nathaniel Merrill (1702-1772) to Waterbury, CT
John Merrill (1669-1748) to West Hartford, CT
John Merrill (1636-1712) to Hartford, CT

My daughter-in-law informed me that this cousin connection is not a blood relationship because her great-great-grandmother, Frances Merrill, was adopted by the Merrill family

  1. After further investigation, this cousin relationship is indeed by blood. The family legend about the adoption of Francis turns out to be in correct - for details, see https://ramblinrussells.blogspot.com/2019/06/investigating-family-legend.html
